In this session, we heard from Edinburgh Innovations who shared their experiences building platforms for innovation that linked TTOs to outside businesses for impact-focussed commercial collaborations and support. The learning outcomes were to understand how these processes could be replicated across all institution types and sizes, including KTP models, setting goals and building relationships for longer-term collaboration. We heard from two powerful speakers in this session, starting with an incredible case study by Sophie Chester-Glyn who founded Coproduce Care CIC. A social enterprise started from the ground up based on Sophie’s PhD research and through commercial tenders and funded projects became a recognised contributor to government health and social care policy whilst employing multiple roles. Then we heard from Bridget Sealey who provides consultancy for a range of HEI collaborations including commercial policy work.

Kay Purle opened this session with a fantastic exploration of the Lincolnshire Open Research and Innovation Centre showcasing how a HEI can be a recognised leader in commercial development in their local area. James Finnie, Social Enterprise Business Consultant at Community Enterprise in Scotland - CEiS, broke down an exciting collaboration between their Social Enterprise expertise in assesment and scaling runways with Scottish HEIs creating a dedicated pipeline for impact-led ventures. We heard from Emma Salgard Cunha who has built sector leading processes for AHSS as Commercialisation manager at Cambridge Enterprise and Tom Williamson prompted an interesting discussion about the potential for developing academic-based entrepeneurship roles.
